Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Kang Mireu
◎ Character's Canon: White Christmas
◎ Character's Age: 18
◎ Canon Point: End of series
◎ Background/History: Not a whole heck of a lot of information is given on Mireu's childhood background, though considering some of the stunts Mireu pulls almost completely consequence free it's probably fairly safe to assume that his parents had a fairly lax style of child rearing. While there might not be much known about his early childhood, there's plenty to know about his high school career. Starting off with the kind of overly strict almost totalitarian high school that Mireu attended.

Susin High is a private school, isolated deep in the mountains of South Korea. The school forbids all extracurricular activities and encourages its students to do very little besides study. There's only one break a year (an eight day break around Christmas), and even visits from parents at other times of the year are discouraged. The students call it Three Years Alcatraz for a reason. But hey! The methods seem to work. Susin High houses the top 0.1% of South Korean high school students, and has an incredible success rate when it comes to exam scores and getting its students into top universities. It's an incredible school as far as academics go, even if it can put a pretty big toll on the students' emotional well being.

What's even more incredible is a boy with nicknames like "Mad Mireu" and "The Mad Dragon" could manage to fit into a school with such a strict no nonsense attitude to it. As it is, based on Susin's demerit point system for misconduct, Mireu was already walking a very, very fine line between staying in the school and getting himself booted out for good. He certainly had his fair share of small offenses at school, though larger stunts (like bungee jumping off the school roof) were what really did him in. Still, despite Mireu's fun loving personality and general disregard for rules and his own personal safety he was still doing pretty well staying in school. He was a brilliant boy, even scoring better than the school's genius, Choi Chihoon (who Mireu had his own, private rivalry with that even Chihoon was unaware of), at one point. Troublemaker or not, he seemed worth keeping around.

That is, until he was framed from a crime he didn't commit.

Now in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't a serious crime, a little (mostly) harmless vandalism. Someone poured out the gunpowder from several fireworks and used it to blow a hole into the side of the school's main statue. No one was actually hurt in this prank, but unfortunately for Mireu the act of vandalism was still grounds for expulsion, and since signs unfairly pointed back to a boy who already had many (many) marks against him that was strike three. Mireu was out.

When someone is framed for a crime they didn't commit, understandably most people tend to be upset about it. Mireu was no exception. Most people would also want to find out what had really happened, and set things right for themselves. Again, Mireu was no exception. Most people would try to talk to an authority figure (such as a teacher), or contact friends in the school to see if they could help track down the real culprit. Mireu was-- … Actually, Mireu waited until the eight day Christmas break Susin has every year, and broke into the school when only seven students and one teacher remained behind for the holidays, so maybe Mireu was an exception in this case.

Whether it's how most people would have handled the situation or not, Mireu did choose to break into his school during the holiday break, and hack into the security cameras so that he could avoid the one PE teacher still in the school, and more importantly so he could keep an eye on his target, Jo Youngjae. Mireu had done enough sleuthing from afar to find out that Youngjae had been the one to get his hands on the fireworks used to blow up part of the statue. Unfortunately, Mireu didn't do enough fact checking to make sure Youngjae was the real culprit (he wasn't). However, Mireu's sudden and very violent assault against Youngjae did eventually lead him to figure out who really blew up the statue, another classmate named Yoonsu.

It turned out that little bungee jumping stunt that Mireu had pulled off to earn the nickname "Mad Mireu" cost Yoonsu something big: the chance to get out of Susin High and finally pursue music like he wanted. After an initially violent confrontation with Yoonsu over this, Mireu got the full story out of Yoonsu, and after a genuine apology to the other boy decided it was time for him to hightail it out of the school and head back home.

Before heading out, however, curiosity got the better of Mireu and he did a little last minute snooping on the one teacher left at Susin after hearing a vaguely suspicious phone conversation. Sneaking into the staff room to check out the binder that the teacher was holding turned out to be a bad call, the PE teacher teacher came back in almost immediately and literally tossed Mireu to the ground before dragging him to the detention room and locking him inside. Even worse for Mireu, the teacher goes missing after that and Mireu is stuck inside the detention room until one of his classmates who knows about the hacked security cameras, Muyeol, finds Mireu waving at the camera for help.

The icing on the cake is that when Muyeol goes to approach Mireu, he doesn't let Mireu out of the room and instead questions what he did to get himself thrown in there (you know, besides breaking into a school he was expelled from). It takes awhile, and a lot of posturing and exaggerations, but Mireu finally gets his classmates to set him free by promising to tell them what the teacher was looking at in exchange for them just opening the damn detention door.

You see, while Mireu was doing his own poking around to find out who had framed him for the statue case, the remaining Susin students were trying to puzzle through their own mystery. All of the seven students that had chosen to stay behind had received a cryptic letter that condemned them for various crimes/sins they'd committed, and the students wanted to know who had sent it and why. The hope was that whatever the teacher had been looking at would give them another clue to their own puzzle. Mireu kept true to his word and brought them to the binder, revealing the page that the teacher had been looking at, Kim Jinsoo's student file.

Kim Jinsoo, as it would turn out, was a boy that had committed suicide not too long before the events of the show. This would turn out to be a very pivotal plot point in the series. One that actually has very little to do with Mireu, because as soon as he handed over the binder to his classmates he stuck to what he said he was going to do, and he hit the road. Or more accurately, he hit the snow. Skiing his way down the mountain a little at a time, things going just fine for him until he managed to get himself caught in an avalanche.

A temporary setback seemed like a blessing in disguise (seemed being the keyword), when a beautiful older woman named Junghye dug Mireu out of the snow, fed him, and let him stay in her tent with her. She claimed to be a climber, up in the mountains for the chance to do some ice climbing, but the weather had gotten nasty and they needed to head back to his school so they could take shelter. While Mireu wasn't overwhelmed by the idea he relented, and began the arduous task of climbing back up the mountain with her. Along the way getting closer to Junghye, and quickly developing a crush on her.

While Mireu had fun snow adventures with a (seemingly) nice, if not somewhat weird cutie, his classmates weren't having such a great time at the school. It turned out that a man they'd let into the school, a psychiatrist who'd survived a nasty car crash, was actually a wanted serial killer (oops…), and during Mireu's absence the killer, Kim Yohan, killed the PE teacher, took over the school, and began psychologically torturing the students there.

Junghye and Mireu manage to sneak back into the school at night, with little to no problems, and because of Mireu's determination to stay hidden (still assuming that the teacher was around and, you know, not dead), the two managed to spend a decent amount of time avoiding the doctor as well as the other students. This eventually raised questions for Mireu. Where were his classmates? Even if he was going out of his way to stay out of their sight, he should have seen some signs of them. Piecing things together quickly, Mireu realized something was wrong, and he set up a small trap for the doctor to knock him out.

Even without knowing the situation, Mireu recognized the man was holding a gun, and quickly scooped that up for himself, assuming correctly that it'd be in his best interest not to give it back to Yohan. He was treated with a hero's welcome, piled on top of by excited classmates happy that their torture is done. The flood of relief is momentarily disrupted by some bad news, however, not only did the doctor kill the teacher, but Choi Chihoon also did not make it. After Chihoon had been caught creating an escape plan (that had failed), the doctor had carted him off, and the others had heard a gunshot echo through the school. Chihoon's punishment for not playing by the doctor's rules.

The shock and confusion Mireu felt over this wasn't allowed to settle for long. The others, so relieved by the fact that they were still alive, immediately began to celebrate their own freedom, with alcohol pilfered from various teacher's rooms. Mireu stayed sober (and thinking ahead removed the bullets from the gun he had on him, in case a drunken classmate made a bad move), and tried to stay chipper and join in the celebrations, while still struggling with fact that Choi Chihoon was apparently gone. A struggle he didn't have to deal with for too long. After a little incident with one of Mireu's classmates threatening the doctor with the empty gun, it was revealed that Chihoon was still alive and kicking, and in another burst of relieved excitement the students ran to find him and set him free.

Finally, after a long arduous trial everything seemed to be right at Susin High.

That is... until Junghye revealed herself to be the doctor's accomplice, a patient of his that became obsessed with him years ago. Having managed to lift the gun for herself, Junghye slashed open Mireu's hand to retrieve the bullets from him. She released Yohan, and the two quickly take the school back over, imprisoning the students once more, though this time Mireu was among those trapped inside the school.

Yohan and Junghye weren't able to keep a calm iron grip for long, however. Two of the students, Chihoon and Muyeol were able to make enough contact to alert the police to the fact that something was wrong up at Susin, though the trip out into the mountains to find an area with enough reception ended in Chihoon having a badly broken leg, and a quickly rising fever.

The doctor was forced to use his prisoners as hostages, demanding that the police contact the student's parents so he could have "counseling" sessions with them and the students, releasing the students one by one back to their parent's care after they spoke to him. All the while Mireu stayed by Chihoon's side as the other boys condition continued to deteriorate, fearing that the longer the doctor dragged the counseling sessions out, the more likely it was his rival was die.

The counseling ended with a bang, when Yohan got wind of the police actually breaking into the school (using Mireu's own map and routes to get inside), and took Muyeol to the roof of the school, where a gunshot rang out and the two collapsed on the roof. The police wasted no more time rushing all injured students off to the hospital, including a still living Park Muyeol. Out of the school, out of harms way, the students could finally rest easy thinking the man that had terrorized them was finally dead.

Which of course means that the doctor wasn't really dead after all. An incredibly incompetent police task force, and an even more incompetent forensic examiner managed to mistake Yohan for the PE teacher, and the man was saved. The moment the students learned this, some terrible news came shortly afterwards. To escape from any more of the doctor's careful meddling designed to push them to their breaking points, one of the students took his own life. After hearing this the remaining seven realized they needed to take matters into their own hands in order to finally escape. A hasty, ill thought out plan was hatched.

After following the doctor to the roof of the hospital, and having a short exchange about whether his social experiment on the students had or hadn't worked, they acted together to push him over the edge of the building. Of course, the doctor managed to grab onto the ledge, and stay up just long enough to gloat one last time about having been right, before choosing to let himself fall to his death. It wasn't technically murder, but a crime of some sort had been committed and the remaining students had to band together to create a believable, detailed lie about the events of Kim Yohan's death. A story that lined up well enough they managed to completely escape any charges they might otherwise have to face.

◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Yes, Mireu is a hacker. He's not a blockbuster movie hacker by any means, but he does a pretty good job hacking into computers and electronic devices he can directly connect to. For example, he hacks into his school's security cameras, but has to be inside the school where he can physically connect to them in order to pull this off. He's pretty crafty with his hacking too. He customizes the set up on his surveillance system so that when it's in automatic mode it will jump to footage from cameras recording any sort of movement, eliminating his need to endlessly flip through various footage to find out where people are.

◎ Personality: Kang Mireu earned the nickname "Mad Mireu" for a reason. While he's not actually "mad" in any sense of the word, he is a young man that enjoys his dangerous and ill thought out stunts, including (but not limited to) bungee jumping off his school roof with a cord he guesstimated the length of (bad, bad idea), skiing down a mountainside that hasn't been marked off as safe for skiers (again, don't do this), and jokingly pointing a loaded gun at his friends (absolutely, under no circumstances should this ever be a thing you even consider doing). Still, despite suffering from a very extreme case of the "teenage boy"s, Mireu's not actually crazy, he's just has very little regard for the personal safety of himself and others, to a degree.

See, as wild as Mireu can be, the boy knows when to wise up and play safe. He enjoys dangerous stunts, but he's self aware enough not to let other people do things that he considers dangerous. For example, he might jokingly wave a loaded gun at a group of his classmates, but he'll also take the bullets out of it before leaving it lying around the same group of kids when they're getting drunk off their asses. His self preservation might seem low at times, but his common sense is still there and fully functional, despite his best attempts to hide it.

And hide it he does. Mireu's a performer at heart. He likes to act out for attention, though even without an audience he will still pull dangerous stunts for fun, and let out loud screams when he's alone on the middle of a mountain just for the sake of screaming. And boy does he scream loudly. The boy seems to love the sound of his own excited yelling. But more than that, he still likes when people watch and cheer for him, and he likes people listening to him. To put it simply, Mireu is a ham. He'll drop into swaggering overacting at the drop of a hat to get bigger reactions out of people, even if those reactions are just a series of exasperated sighs. He plays the role of the crazy boy just as much (if not more) than he actually fits the role.

He actually goes out of his way to act cartoony and exaggerated most of the time. He gives speeches for the sake of giving speeches, moves his arms and twists his face in an overly animated manner, cracks his neck and jaw to make himself seem more "bad boy" intimidating, and does a whole song and dance number including nervous laughter and neck rubbing when he tells a bad lie. And when he tells a lie? He tells it badly. Mireu is absolutely appalling liar, in that his ability to cover up the truth is almost non-existent, much less to make up a fake story.

So when Mireu does actually drop the act, that's a good indication something is really wrong. As silly as he can be, Mireu knows how to get serious when he needs to be. That common sense he has comes in handy when it comes to judging situations where he absolutely cannot joke around in, and while it doesn't always seem that way, Mireu usually treats life or death situations with the severity that they require. When someone seriously threatens him or the people around him, all jokes end. Silly questions meant to taunt and egg someone on turn serious. The near constant playful grin disappears in seconds. While he's still an immature doofus in so many ways, Mireu does have a certain degree of maturity that allows him to handle these surprisingly difficult situations with a level head.

Surprising, because he doesn't treat smaller matters with that same clear headedness. When someone who he really likes decides to betrays him, such as the case of Junghye, Mireu is sullen, sometimes even quiet as he mulls over the situation. He doesn't feel like joking around like he usually does, or playing his usual Mad Mireu role. When someone he doesn't care about betrays him though? Well, that's another matter entirely. Mireu doesn't have the most explosive or sudden temper in the world, but he is very quick to turn to violence. He'll throw a punch quickly without asking questions first. If someone ticks him off or makes him angry? Hit them. Sure, why not? It's a perfectly reasonable response to something that's irritating him, isn't it? He also enjoys a certain degree of theatrics at these moments too, slasher smiles, that previously mentioned jaw cracking/popping, and not to mention how aggressively he'll knock someone to the ground (repeatedly) without giving them a chance to explain themselves. Mireu's a big proponent of revenge for slights of all shapes and sizes, and will always try to dish back whatever someone gives him. He's also incredibly unapologetic to any sort of physical harm he might cause another person.

That said, he is, however, apologetic about more serious wrongdoings on his part. He might not feel bad about busting up Youngjae's face when Youngjae was innocent, but he did feel genuinely sorry about ruining Yoonsu's chance at escape from a school he really hated, and sincerely apologized that his bungee jumping stunt ruined that for him. Mireu often acts carefree and easy going, but he he's not a complete child. He accepts responsibility for his more harmful actions with a surprising level of quiet dignity. As much as he doesn't want to look like someone who would feel guilty for his own actions, no matter the situation, Mireu is as capable of guilt and regret as the next guy.

A lot of that is carefully crafted by Mireu himself, however. He doesn't really want people to see him sweat. It's rare that someone will actually see him drop the smile and make a serious comment, though it does happen during serious enough conversations. Deep down, Mireu's not that unusual for a teenage boy. The sort of things that'd hurt and upset a normal eighteen year old boy will usually get under Mireu's skin as well. The thing is Mireu just covers it up better than most people.

That's not to say Mireu isn't a little naturally offbeat. While much of his image is definitely shaped on purpose, Mireu is still naturally quirky. He wants to enjoy life as much as possible, and likes when people laugh with him (though if they don't, that's not his problem). More than anything, he does things for his own amusement. He'll make sudden sounds or movements to scare people. He tells obnoxious jokes to get under people's skin and rile them up for a laugh. He's incredibly impulsive to the point of being dangerously rash.

Along the same veins, he's also quick to develop feelings. While he barely knew Junghye, and hardly had time to get to know her before she turned around and betrayed him, Mireu still fell for her pretty hard. He's a love, or at least like, at first sight kind of guy. If he sees a beautiful and quirky woman who moves him, he won't hesitate to act on his feelings, and he will act on them with little hesitation. Mireu's as forward as he is fast moving, and doesn't try to cover up his feelings. At least, he doesn't try to cover up his affections, hatred is something else.

While Mireu's fast to pick fights and throw punches, when he's got stronger feelings of dislike for a person he keeps it to himself. He claims that when you hate someone, really hate them, that you keep it a secret so even the person you hate doesn't realize it. The claim is used to explain his feelings about Chihoon, but that isn't exactly the right label to put on his rivalry with the other boy. His hatred isn't for Chihoon specifically, but for the frustrated feelings he experiences over being upstaged on almost every level by him.

Believe it or not, Mireu is a genius. He doesn't always act like it (he often doesn't, in fact), but he's a brilliant boy. It's what allows him to do things like measure his own bungee cord while having no experience in the field, and live to tell the tale, or hack into the school's security footage without anyone finding out. His grades are stellar (when he bothers to apply himself), and his penchant for gadgetry and electronic tampering is impressive by any standards, much less for a boy of eighteen. He knows he's smart too, even if that isn't a trait of his that he usually brags about, and it doesn't settle well with him that he's only been able to beat Chihoon once in his life. The fact that Chihoon doesn't seem to share a feeling of rivalry with him (or with anyone, really) makes the bitter pill even harder to swallow.

For the most part though, he does manage to swallow it. Mireu is the kind of guy to roll with punches well. Which serves him well when his easy going life of fun gets serious fast. In a matter of a week, Mireu is forced to go from a rash young man who will break into a school to beat up a guy that got him expelled, to… an equally rash young man ready to commit murder. It sounds like a regression, but it isn't, at least not exactly.

It's true that murder is a worse crime than assault (though by a technicality he didn't actually commit murder), but the reasons behind it were a little different. Mireu's anger at being expelled was understandable, even sympathetic, but his reaction was a little over the top. His violence had very little consequences for him, considering he was already expelled, and was basically a child lashing out in frustration over an unfair situation. While beating Youngjae black and blue did some nasty temporary damage to Youngjae, it didn't leave any permanent scars. Mireu could walk away from the act with a clear conscience, even when it turned out he'd gotten the wrong guy.

Killing a man, or at least playing a large role in his death? That's another matter. While Mireu still acted in the heat of the moment, moving along with a plan someone else (Muyeol) came up with, the consequences of his actions were much greater. Mireu took no enjoyment from watching Yohan fall to his death the way he did when he kicked Youngjae around. It was an act of self defense, rather than an act of selfish revenge. Within a matter of days Mireu is forced to give up the childish pettiness he reveled in before, and learn to do something truly terrible in order to preserve the lives of the people around him.

It's not a usual rite of passage by any means, but being betrayed and committing a serious crime burdens Mireu with a maturity and responsibility that he would only occasionally bear in passing before.

◎ Powers/Abilities: No special powers. He's as strong and fast as a normal eighteen year old boy that stays physically active. He's exceptionally smart, and gifted with electronics (building high voltage joy buzzers that can knock a guy out). He's also a skilled hacker, but that's been covered in another section.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: His laptop. Just a normal, every day laptop. Nothing particularly special about it now that it's separated from his canon setting.

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: Fire
◎ Sense: Sight. Mireu seems to be more visually focused than anything else, wanting to keep his eyes on things even when he's not physically there. Choosing to do things like specifically hack into surveillance equipment.
◎ Seven Character Traits: + (Intelligent, Free spirited, Honest) - (Rash, Thoughtless, Selfish) • Energetic

Samples

◎ First-Person Sample: A meme!

I will gladly write a more traditional first person sample if this doesn't suffice.

◎ Third-Person Sample: Heightened security should be a discouragement for most people, a big red warning sign to stop poking your nose into business that doesn't concern you. Unfortunately, Kang Mireu had never been very good at paying attention to signs, metaphorically speaking. Though Mireu was never great at paying attention to literal signs either. Generally speaking that was how he lived his life, if something didn't suit his interest he ignored it entirely.

Which is why he found himself inside the CERES Research Tower for the third time that week, getting significantly bolder with his exploration each time he entered, and entering itself wasn't always an easy task considering he didn't currently have a job working there. The likelihood of him getting one seemed fairly slim too, given his growing habit of sneaking into the building and trying to poke around where he wasn't wanted. As far as Mireu was concerned, however, if they didn't want people to be curious about what was inside this building they wouldn't have made it so damn large and obvious from every other part of the colony. It was like they were directly drawing attention to themselves, a big 'come see what secrets we have hidden away', and who was Mireu to resist an invitation like that?

He tried not to arouse suspicion as he carefully strolled down, but being inconspicuous when you're over six feet and have bright red hair wasn't the easiest task to accomplish. Still, walking around the building like he belonged there seemed like a better plan than trying to creep along the walls in a way that made it obvious he was snooping, though if he had any idea how to get inside the tower's ventilation system he'd be crawling around this way and that, instead of trying to pick a hallway where no one was currently milling around.

Several long, tense minutes passed by before he found what he was looking for, an empty corridor with a single obvious security camera mounted up on the wall. With a cockeyed grin, Mireu got to work almost immediately, having to perch himself awkwardly on a hand railing (ill advised) as he began fiddling with camera almost immediately, quickly getting absorbed in his work.

Absorbed enough that he didn't notice the passage of time, or the presence of anyone else around him until he felt a hand clamp down hard on his shoulder. Frozen in spot. Slowly, ever so slowly Mireu turned his head to look into the pupilless gaze of a security robot. With a nervous grin, and an even more nervous laugh Mireu slowly let go of the wires he was fiddling with. Unfortunately for him, the robot did not let go of his shoulder, and Mireu's smile faltered.

"I'll just show myself out."

Apparently that was not an acceptable option, and for the third time that week Mireu found himself being roughly tossed out the front doors.
